No, it's not normal. There are multiple possibilities, for instance there's no point in scanning a Time Machine drive, as it will scan each instance/alias of a file leading to an enormous amount of scanning time. Also, if you have any other AV or App that is also scanning files on-access this will largely increase the time it takes.
